Our Story

Hannah’s House takes its name from Hannah Coit—the wife of George Coit, the original owner of the Coit House and one of Buffalo’s founding figures.

While George Coit’s name appears in history books and on buildings, Hannah’s story is largely absent. Like many women of her time, her contributions, labor, and presence were essential—but unrecorded, unnamed, and overlooked.

We chose the name Hannah’s House intentionally.

It honors the women who have always been there—supporting families, holding households, nurturing communities—yet whose needs and experiences have too often been minimized or forgotten. In many ways, Hannah’s story mirrors the experience of pregnant and postpartum people today: visible in role, invisible in care.

Modern maternity systems often focus intensely on the moment of birth, while overlooking what comes before and after—nourishment, emotional well-being, rest, and community. Parents are expected to recover, adjust, and thrive with limited support during one of the most vulnerable transitions of their lives.

Hannah’s House exists to change that.

By centering food, mood, and connection, Hannah’s House brings attention back to the people who have historically carried families quietly—and ensures they are seen, supported, and held in community.
